Having reviewed already other American companies, it was about time I write this Leesa mattress review. They are extremely popular in the US, endorsed by Michael Phelps, and they have launched in the UK almost 3 years ago back in 2015.
I received my Leesa mattress almost 3 weeks ago. It is a rolled mattress so it arrived packed in a nice carton box. The mattress is designed in the US but it’s made here in the UK using high-quality materials. They follow the ‘one mattress fits all’ approach so all you have to choose is the size that suits you better. Give the mattress a couple of days to fully decompress but also for the smell to wear off. This is natural with all rolled mattresses so no need to worry here. Let’s move now to the full review below.
MATERIALS & CONSTRUCTION
Leesa use a total of three foam layers to make their mattresses. In more detail the layers are:
- A cooling Avena foam layer (1) which allows the mattress to breath and stay cool during the night. It also adds bounce so you can move freely.
- A memory foam layer (2) which is there to provide your body with the needed pressure relief.
- A base foam layer (3) which strengthens the whole cunstruction and is able to provide support and comfort for any body type.
In the image below, you can have a better look of how the different layers are positioned in every mattress.
COVER
The cover of the Leesa mattress is made of polyester. They chose this material because it’s very breathable but at the same time is quite strong. The downside is that it’s not as soft as cotton but you can use some high quality sheets to make up for this. I personally like the use of polyester as I think it has more advantages than downsides. The cover features a zip and is removable. However, the maker advises spot cleaning whenever is needed so you should not machine wash it. Leesa applied a light grey colour with 4 white stripes and the design looks simple but very clean. Overall, Leesa did a very good job with the cover as it keeps the mattress cool and looks great!
COMFORT & SUPPORT
This mattress is designed to cover most people’s needs. In terms of firmness, I would say it’s a 3.3 in my virtual scale. I remind you that 0 is really soft and 5 is really firm.
I want now to talk about the different sleeping positions and how Leesa performed in the tests. Starting from the back position, the mattress felt really comfortable and I got the right amount of ‘hugging’ from the memory foam layer. My spine and hips were properly supported and I think Leesa perfromed very well in this position.
Turning to the side position, the mattress kept providing me with good support and I felt it was quite comfortable. Sinkage increased but I would probably wanted a bit more in order for my spine to be better positioned. I felt that Leesa didn’t perform as well as in the back position but my husband felt it did very well for him. So if you are of low weight maybe Leesa won’t do veru well in the side position but it probably works better with heavier bodies.
Finally, moving to the stomach position, the mattress adjusted quickly and I felt that my spine and hips were properly aligned. It was really comfortable to rest in this position and I think that Leesa did really well here. Overall, the combination of Avena and memory foam works very well in the stomach and back position and just ok in the side position.
As for the edge support, Leesa is very well made and the mattress performs well even on the edges. I did sit in the corner and changed positions and Leesa reacted very well. So no problem at all here.
SERVICE
I have already mentioned that the Leesa mattress comes packed in a box. The box features some handles so you can manoeuvre it easily in the house and it measures 40cm x 40cm x 114cm. The mattress is available in 8 sizes starting from UK Single and going up to UK Super King.
The Leesa mattresses are build to order which means that it will take a bit more time for your mattress to arrive. The estimate time is between 4-7 days depending on the area you live. My mattress arrived 4 days after I placed the order which is the average time for Greater London. They use UPS to ship their mattresses and the courier was really polite and helpful. Unfortunately, there is no next day delivery service here and no Saturday delivery. This is not great as I am usually very busy during the weekdays. Overall, I think that Leesa could do a better job here. Their service is not bad at all, it’s more that their competitors deliver faster and have more options. So definitely room to impove here.
TRIAL PERIOD & GUARANTEE
The Leesa mattress comes with a 100 night trial period for you to make up your mind whether you want to keep it or not. This is something that most of the makers that I have reviewed here offer these days and it’s great to have as it makes it so much easier to buy online. If you are not happy with your mattress, you can return it for free and get a full refund. All you have to do is contact their customer service department and they will arrange everything for you.
Leesa also comes with a 10 year limited guarantee so you know you are covered for a long time. Like every purchase make sure you read carefully the terms and conditions so you know what you are getting from the cover. Overall, I think that Leesa does a great job here so no complaints.
RESPONSIBILITY
Leesa is a company that is really involved with the local communities and charity. For every ten mattresses they sell, the donate one. They work with many charities and their work is outstanding. To find out more about their work, you can visit their dedicated page here.
Besides the donated mattresses, Leesa also have partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation and they plant one tree for every mattress they sell. This is a big deal and I think that every company should follow their lead.
VERDICT
Completing this Leesa mattress review I would like to share my final thoughts with you. I personally liked a lot this mattress and the approach they took with it. The Avena foam is very effective in keeping the mattress cool during the nights (really important for couples) and the Polyester cover is really good. Leesa performed really well in 2 out of 3 positions and it has good edge support. I would love if there was a faster delivery option but for some, this is not an issue. I think this mattress is a great option for couples and for people who prefer the stomach and back position. It’s also completely latex-free for those who suffer from allergies. If you tick these boxes, then Leesa should be high on your list.
