Emma is a quite popular brand in Europe and they became quickly successfull here in the UK. In this Emma Original mattress review, I will talk about their new product and whether it’s worth your money.
The Emma Original follows a different design approach compared to the Hybrid one and it’s solely a foam mattress. That means that you won’t find any springs in the Original version. It’s a rolled mattress so you should expect it packed in a nice carton box. Mine arrived almost 3 weeks ago so it’s a good time to write this review.
An Airgocell foam layer which is their signature material. It has the ability to breath and allows airflow during sleep. It also provides some pressure relief.
A memory foam layer that is there to provide the body with the needed support and pressure relief. It also adds comfort and ensures that the spine stays well aligned.
A cold foam layer that is the base of the mattress. It’s also designed to provide your hips and shoulders with the extra needed support.
The image below shows the position of the 3 different layers.
The cover of the Emma original is a really nice one. It has a lot of features that I personally liked a lot! They use pores and climate fibres to ensure that the mattress remains cool during sleep. The cover is made of 2 materials, 99% polyester and 1% elastane. The latter is very useful as it allows the cover to fit properly to the mattress. The cover also features handles on the sides that allow you to move it easier. At the bottom of the mattress, Emma has applied some anti-slip elements which help the mattress stay in place. This is very practical and useful and I really liked the fact there is so much thinking behind the design.
The cover is removeable and you can machine wash it at low temperature. So no need to worry here, you can keep your cover clean and fresh with minimal effort. Overall, I think this is one of the best covers I have seen!
COMFORT & SUPPORT
The Emma Original is a medium-firm mattress that will suit most people’s needs. If I put it on my virtual scale, I would say it’s a 6 with 10 being really firm. So it’s slightly softer than other medium-firm mattresses that I have reviewed here. I want to talk now about the different sleeping positions and how Emma Original performed.
Starting from the back position, the memory foam layer immediately hugged my shoulders and hips and I felt very comfortable. At the same time, the mattress provided me with the needed support and my spine alignment was the correct one. What was also noticeable was the speed that the foam layers adapted which was very fast.
Turning to the side position, sinkage increased to allow my hips to get to the right position. I felt both comfortable and supported and my spine was aligned properly. The fact that Emma Original is slightly softer than other medium firm mattresses make it more comfortable for this position.
Finally, turning to the stomach position, I felt that the mattress is slightly softer than I would like. In general, I prefer firmer mattresses for this position so I found the Emma Original to be ok here. It wasn’t bad but I would prefer a bit more support in the hips area. So stomach sleepers maybe they should look at other mattresses.
The edge support of the Emma Original is quite good and overall it is a sturdy construction. Also, with the lack of springs, motion transfer is minimal which means that this is a good choice for couples. Of course, it’s not as bouncy as the Hybrid one but this is typical for all foam mattresses. Overall, I think this is a really good mattress for back and side sleepers and an ok one for stomach sleepers.
I have already mentioned that the Emma Original is a rolled mattress. It is shipped in a white and blue carton box and it’s delivered directly to your door by UPS or DPD. Mine arrived with UPS and the delivery experience was great. Emma offers a free delivery service for all sizes but this is only for weekdays. If you want a Saturday delivery, then you will have to pay an extra £35. If you want to have your old mattress removed then Emma can help you with that but this costs an extra £35.
Deliveries take between 1-3 working days which is quite fast. Mine arrived 2 days after I placed my order on site. The mattress is available in 8 sizes, including some EU ones and that is great especially for those having an IKEA bed frame. Overall, the service was good but I think the extra options (Saturday delivery & Mattress removal) are a bit pricey compared to other makers.
TRIAL PERIOD & GUARANTEE
The Emma Original comes with a 10-year guarantee which is pretty much the average for all rolled mattresses these days. This is great to see as you know that you will be covered for a long time. You will also get a 100 night trial period which allows you to test the mattress and decide whether you want to keep it or not. If you are not happy with it, then you can return it for free and get a full refund. The return process is quite simple and all you have to do is contact them and arrange a collection. You don’t have to keep the original packaging to return a mattress.
All the returned mattresses are offered to charities which is great to see! In particular, Emma works closely with the British Heart Foundation and Debra. Overall, Emma offers a really good service here which of course is in line with the competition. However, it is great to see that they work with charities and they care about society.
Completing this Emma Original mattress review, it’s a good time to share with you my final thoughts. Emma managed to produce another great mattress and overall I really liked it. The Airgocell technology is definitely one of my favourite ones and it’s a mattress that will serve you well both in the summer and the winter. It’s a slightly softer medium-firm mattress that is exellent for back and side sleepers. If you are a stomach sleeper though there are better options out there. Emma Original is also good for couples who want minimal motion transfer for a peacefull sleep. Finally, it comes with a great service that is one of the best in the market. If you look for all these then the Emma Original could be a good option for you.
