More and more mattress makers understand that people need more options, especially affordable ones. In this OTTY Essential mattress review, I explore this new entry and whether it’s a good option for someone on a budget.
After creating a great mattress like the OTTY Hybrid, I thought it would be difficult for them to cut the cost and still make another hybrid mattress. It’s well known after all that hybrid mattresses are more expensive to make compared to foam ones. However, OTTY stuck to their expertise so this mattress is also a hybrid one but it’s less thick. It comes packed in a box and it’s delivered directly to your door. Mine arrived around 3 weeks ago so it was about time, I write this review.
MATERIALS & CONSTRUCTION
The OTTY Essential has a 5-layer construction. In detail, these are:
- A Cool Blue Gel Infused Memory Foam layer which helps the mattress stay cool during sleep.
- An HD Reflex Foam layer which provides your body with the needed pressure relief.
- A pocket spring layer which is there to provide your body with the needed support. They use big pocket springs that are 14cm tall. According to the maker they help with posture.
- OTTY have also added jointed air-flow support sides. They help with airflow but also improve the edge support.
- A high-density foam layer which keeps the mattress altogether and works as its base.
The OTTY Essential is 20cm tall which is 5cm less than its bigger brother. The image below shows how each layer is positioned.
The cover of the OTTY Essential is a very beautiful one. It looks vibrant and they definitely had younger people in mind when they were designing this. It is made of 97% Polyester and 3% Spandex so it’s a very breathable sleeping surface. They used a thick knit fabric that feels strong and of high quality. You can remove it easily and you can machine wash it at 40 degrees. This is great as you can maintain it clean and fresh with minimal effort. Overall, it has all the features that a good cover should have and I think they did a good job here.
COMFORT & SUPPORT
This mattress was designed to suit the average sleeper so it has a medium-firm feel. If I use my virtual scale here, I would say it’s a 3.3 with 5 being really firm. It’s time now to talk about the different sleeping positions and how this mattress performed.
Starting from the back position, the pocket springs reacted quickly to my body weight and the support was good. However, I didn’t feel that the pressure relief was adequate and the memory foam layers didn’t ‘hug’ me like other hybrid mattresses. In general, it was comfortable in this position.
Moving to the side position, I felt that the springs did a great job. In general, this mattress is very responsive and sinkage was ideal. My spine was aligned properly and I didn’t feel any discomfort on my hips and shoulders. I felt that my body was well supported but it was comfortable at the same time.
Finally, moving to the stomach position, the mattress felt firm enough for good spine alignment. My hips were in a good position but again I felt that the pressure relief was average. This is something I expected to be honest since this is a budget-friendly mattress.
Regarding the edge support, the jointed air-flow support sides they have added do a good job so this mattress performs well across every corner. However, if you are a couple you should know that the motion transfer is noticeable due to the existence of pocket springs.
It’s already mentioned above that the OTTY Essential is a rolled mattress and comes packed in a box. You will also get Free Next Day delivery for all weekdays. If you are busy with work and you prefer a Saturday delivery, this will cost you an extra £20. However, I have to mention here the extra options that are available to all customers. For example, you can have your mattress placed in the room of your choice by two couriers. This only costs an extra £10 and I think it’s really worth spending a bit more for that. They also offer a mattress removal service for an extra fee which can be combined with all the above options.
I decided to go for a Saturday delivery with packaging disposal service. It cost me an extra £30 but I think it was money well spent. The couriers arrived on time and the whole process was very straightforward. I received a text with my delivery slot and in general, I felt that I knew what to expect. Overall, I think OTTY did an excellent job here and I love the extra options they give to customers.
TRIAL PERIOD & GUARANTEE
Just like most rolled mattresses these days, the OTTY Essential comes with a 100-night trial period that gives you more than 3 months to decide whether you are happy with your purchase. If you are not, you can return it for free and get a full refund. The process is not complicated and they will arrange everything for you. You will also get a 10-year guarantee that shows how confident they are in their mattresses. Overall, they offer what most competitors offer too but still, I am happy with their package.
It’s time now to complete this OTTY Essential mattress review and share my final thoughts with you. I personally think that this is a really good ‘first mattress’. If you look to upgrade but you have a limited budget then this can be a good start. It does provide a lot of support and it comes with great service. Pressure relief is average but for the money you pay, you are getting a great value here.
