Emma is one of the most popular brands in the UK and recently they decided to release a budget option for all those who don’t want to spend much. If you fall into this category, continue reading this Emma Essential mattress review to find out more about it.
This mattress is only sold via marketplaces like WOWCHER and LIVING SOCIAL so you won’t find it on their site. They went with this approach to emphasize the affordability of the Essential mattress. Just like the rest of their range, this mattress is built here in the UK and it’s also a boxed mattress. I got mine about 4 weeks ago so it’s a good time now to write the full review.
Materials & Construction
The Emma Essential mattress is a budget mattress so it features only 2 foam layers. These are:
- A hybrid foam layer which is designed to keep the mattress cool during the night. This type of foam allows airflow but it can also provide your body with the needed pressure relief.
- A supportive HRX foam layer which features a 7-zone cut system. They designed it this way so the mattress can support the more demanding areas of your body like your hips and shoulders. This is a firm foam that will help your spine align properly.
The mattress is not a thick one and it measures 18cm in height. If we compare it with the Emma Original, it’s 7cm thinner. In the picture below, you can see the inside of the Emma Essential mattress.
Cover
The cover of the Emma Essential is made of two parts. The upper one is made of 100% Polyester which is a material that is well known for its durability and breathability. The bottom part is made of 89% polyester and 11% polypropylene. The two parts are connected with a zip so this makes the cover removable. If you want to clean it, you can use your washing machine at 40 degrees. This is great as I like to wash the cover twice a year to keep it clean and fresh! On the sides, they have added 4 handles which will help you when you want to move it. For a cheap mattress like this one, the cover is fantastic and I was really impressed by it. Comfort & Support
This mattress was designed to suit the average sleeper so it comes with a medium-firm feel. If I use my virtual scale here, I would say it’s a 3 with 5 being really firm. I would like now to talk about the different sleeping positions and how this mattress performed.
Starting from the back position, the mattress felt comfortable and it supported me well. It was not the best I have tried but it did a decent job in this position. Pressure relief was not great but this is something I expected since there is no memory foam used here.
Turning to the side position, the mattress adjusted quickly and sinkage increased. My spine was aligned properly and the Emma Essential did a good job in this position. It was comfortable but at the same time, I felt that I was well supported.
Finally, moving to the stomach position, I felt that this mattress is a bit too soft for my taste. I believe that a firmer mattress would do a better job here but the Essential was not that bad. It’s more a matter of taste I guess but I think that this mattress would be better suited to back and side sleepers.
If you are a couple, the foam-only construction means minimal motion transfer which makes it a good option if you are on a budget. On the contrary, the edge support is not great so you should have this in mind.

The Emma Essential mattress is only available at marketplaces like WOWCHER and LIVING SOCIAL. That means that you don’t have any delivery options besides the Free Standard Delivery they offer. With this one, you will get your mattress within 7-10 working days. In my case, it was 8 and the overall service was good. I got a text with my delivery slot and the courier was prompt and polite. As I have already mentioned, the Emma Essential is a rolled mattress so you should expect it packed in a carton box. Trial Period & Guarantee
One way to cut costs is to remove the trial period. This is normal if we consider the low price here. However, the Emma Essential comes with a 5-year trial period. This is not bad and I personally didn’t expect a 10-year guarantee like the one offered with the Emma Original. Overall, this is a mediocre package but I think it’s fair if we consider the cost of the mattress.
Verdict
It’s now time to complete this Emma Essential mattress review and share my final thoughts with you. This is a value for money mattress that will offer you way more than what you will pay for it. Having said that, you should know that this is not the best mattress I have tried by no means but it’s probably the best value for money one I have reviewed. Emma packed a lot in this one so if you are on a tight budget this one should be one to consider.
