One of my favourite home shops in the UK is MADE.COM which is known for their high-end design. Besides stylish furniture and home accessories, they also make mattresses. In this Natural One mattress review, I will talk about their take to create a hybrid mattress using natural materials.
The Natural One is a hybrid mattress which combines pocket springs with memory foam. Just like most mattresses I have reviewed, this is also a rolled one so it comes packed in a box. My mattress arrived around three weeks ago so it was a good time to write the full review.
MATERIALS & CONSTRUCTION
The construction of this mattress is a complicated one featuring a total of 6 layers and the cover. These are:
- A natural cotton layer that is there to allow airflow and improve the breathability of the mattress.
- A cooling memory foam layer. It is there to keep the mattress cool during sleep and also has the ability to regulate your body’s heat.
- A MADEFlex foam layer. This adds a bit of extra bounce and helps the mattress to be more reactive.
- A layer made of 1800 mini pocket springs. It provides your body with the needed support and comfort.
- A reactive memory foam layer. It is there to provide your body with the needed pressure relief, especially in the areas you need it the most (hips & shoulders).
- A supportive foam base that keeps the mattress altogether and works as its base.
In the image below, you can see how the different layers are placed.
COVER
The cover of the Natural One mattress is made of 100% polyester. It’s a quilted knitted cover designed to breathe and allow airflow. It looks strong but unfortunately, it’s not removable which means that you can only spot clean it. The design follows the MADE.COM philosophy. You will get a clean white and light grey cover that looks nice and suits a minimal look. There are no handles or an anti-slip surface and the cover is quite basic compared to other ones. It’s there to do the job but it lacks important features. Overall, I think the cover could be better and MADE should have looked at the competition.
COMFORT & SUPPORT
MADE designed a mattress to suit most customers’ needs. If I put this on my virtual scale, I would say it’s a 3.2 with 5 being very firm. It’s quite similar to the Simba Hybrid in terms of firmness level. I would like to talk now about the different sleeping positions.
Starting from the back position, the mattress felt a bit more bouncy than I expected which is something you would expect from a spring mattress. Some may like this feeling but not me. The memory foam layer didn’t hug my body too much and it felt like a much cheaper mattress. The support was ok but the lack of pressure relief was evident.
Moving to the side position, the springs adjusted quickly which was a positive thing. Sinkage increased and my hips were positioned correctly. I think this was the position that this mattress performed well. I got a good support for my spine but again no pressure relief.
Finally, moving to the stomach position the bouncy feeling returned and it was comfortable but not great. My hips were not supported as much as I wanted which didn’t allow my spine to be aligned correctly.
As for the edge support, the mattress is a solid construction so you will get the same performance across the edges. Overall, the Natural One mattress behaves like a cheaper spring mattress which is not what I expected from a MADE product. If you are after a quality hybrid mattress then you should look elsewhere.
SERVICE
The Natural One mattress is a rolled one so you should expect it packed in a carton box. Unfortunately, they don’t offer a free delivery service and this will cost you an extra £39! This is something that I haven’t seen with any other rolled mattress and it’s very disappointing. They dispatch mattresses within 2 days so the total delivery time is usually 3-4 days. My mattress came on time and the courier was very polite and helpful.
The mattress is available in 4 sizes but there are no EU ones. This is not great for all of us who have IKEA bed frames and I hope they add more sizes. Overall, I was happy with their delivery service but not happy at all that I had to pay for it. I was expecting more from a brand like MADE.
TRIAL PERIOD & GUARANTEE
The Natural One mattress comes with a 10-year guarantee which is the norm of course these days with all rolled mattresses. However, it shows that MADE are confident about their products and it’s great to know that you are covered. You will also get a 101-night trial period which gives you time to try this mattress and decide whether you are happy with it or not. If you are not, you can return it and get a full refund. The process is simple and all you have to do is contact their support team. To return the mattress, you don’t need to keep the original packaging so you can get rid of it once you unpack it. Overall, MADE offers a really good service here.
VERDICT
After finishing this Natural One mattress review, it’s time I share my last thoughts with you. Being a fan of MADE, I had high hopes for this mattress. But the truth is that MADE is not a mattress company and they failed to create a decent rolled mattress. They also named it ‘natural’ by simply inserting a cotton layer into a normal hybrid mattress and this is really disappointing. The mattress doesn’t offer pressure relief and it behaves like a cheap IKEA mattress. It won’t give you back pain but you should get way more at this price. The £39 that you have to pay for delivery is just another proof that MADE saw this mattress as a money maker. It’s a no go for me, especially with all these fantastic mattresses out there.
